The construction of Hamburg’s new Altona station faces another delay.
According to Deutsche Bahn, the opening has been postponed from 2027 to late 2029, due to rising construction costs, stricter safety regulations, and complex ground conditions at the Diebsteich site.
The new terminal will replace the current Altona station and serve as a major mobility hub linking long-distance, regional, S-Bahn, bus and bike routes.
Project costs are expected to exceed €1.3 billion.
City officials say the station will become a “green mobility gateway” – energy-efficient, barrier-free and sustainable for Hamburg’s future.
The existing Altona station will remain operational until construction is complete.
