From November 14 to 24, 2025, train traffic through Cologne Central Station (Köln Hbf) will be partially halted as Deutsche Bahn installs a new digital Stellwerk control system to replace outdated signal technology.
The project is part of the nationwide initiative “Digital Rail Germany” and marks one of the largest modernization programs on the network. Work includes replacement of signal lines, switch control relays and the creation of a centralized traffic management hub.
The affected routes include Köln Hbf, Messe/Deutz, Ehrenfeld and Nippes. Some ICE and regional trains will be cancelled or rerouted, while alternative connections and bus services will be offered.
Once completed, the digital Stellwerk will allow real-time control of signals and switches from a central location, increasing efficiency and safety by up to 40 percent.
The German Transport Ministry called the Cologne upgrade a “blueprint for digital rail operations,” with similar centers planned in Berlin, Frankfurt and Hamburg by 2027.
