Germany is establishing a new federal foundation aimed at preserving its maritime cultural heritage. The “German Maritime Heritage Foundation” is expected to begin operations in 2026.
The foundation will focus on supporting historic ships and other maritime heritage objects, many of which require substantial funding for maintenance and restoration.
According to official plans, around €30 million will be allocated for the years 2026 to 2028, with €10 million provided annually.
The funding will be used for restoration, technical preservation, and ensuring long-term sustainability of maritime heritage assets. Public access to these cultural objects is also expected to be maintained.
The initiative is seen as an important step in preserving Germany’s maritime history, much of which relies on volunteer support.
Regions such as Bremen and Bremerhaven, with strong maritime traditions, are expected to particularly benefit from the new foundation.
