The Herbstplärrer 2025 is in full swing in Augsburg, drawing thousands of guests to Swabia’s largest folk festival. As tradition dictates, the celebration began with the ceremonial tapping of the first beer barrel. But this time, there was a small hiccup.
Mayor Eva Weber stepped onto the stage in the Schaller Festzelt to officially open the festival. Usually, it takes two strong hits with the wooden mallet to start the beer flow. But this time, the first strikes failed.
Tension filled the air. The host even joked about the brewers playing a prank. Soon, the issue was identified — a faulty metal ring on the barrel. After it was fixed, three precise hits opened the flow of fresh beer and the festival kicked off to loud applause.
The Herbstplärrer is often called the “Augsburg Oktoberfest”. Families, students, locals, and tourists come together, many wearing traditional outfits — Lederhosen and Dirndl. There’s laughter, music, toasts, and festive snacks everywhere.
One visitor said: “If you’re not at the Plärrer, you’re not a real Augsburger!”
The next day, over 2000 participants took part in the traditional parade through the city — including clubs, folklore groups, and bands. The route led from Maximilianstraße through Karolinenstraße and Grottenau to the festival grounds. Guests of honor included Bavaria’s PM Markus Söder and Digital Minister Fabian Mehring.
The festival runs until September 7 and promises plenty of attractions, concerts, and family-friendly events.
