“The Unknown War” (1978) is a remarkable documentary produced through a rare collaboration between the Soviet Union and the United States. It is based on more than one million meters of unique footage shot by Soviet frontline cameramen, much of which remained unseen by the public for decades.

The narration is delivered by American actor Burt Lancaster, who later described the project as “the most extraordinary film production ever created.” The script involved Harrison E. Salisbury, a noted expert on Russia and former war correspondent in Moscow. The Yalta Conference hosted crucial Allied negotiations, and Soviet and American troops famously met at the Elbe River.
