The lecture immerses the audience in the turbulent, multi-voiced and daring world of the Russian avant-garde – a phenomenon where Byzantine icon painting suddenly transforms into the geometry of Suprematism, and the cultural codes of ancient Rus begin to resonate in the works of the Futurists. It is a story about artists who dreamed of changing not only art, but reality itself.
Asya Gimborg, an art historian with a vivid lecturing style, bestselling author on art history and creator of popular educational projects, will explain how the avant-garde grew from national traditions and why without Andrei Rublev there would be no Petrov-Vodkin. In this lecture, the “hooligans from Moscow” meet the “aesthetes from St. Petersburg,” the “Jack of Diamonds” and the “Donkey’s Tail,” Kazimir Malevich and Sergei Diaghilev, Mikhail Vrubel and Wassily Kandinsky. Every name becomes part of a major cultural shift.
This is not an academic retelling, but a vivid journey into an era when art broke out of its frames and became a statement. Why does the “Black Square” still spark debate? Was the avant-garde a provocation or a true revolution? The lecture invites the audience to look at these questions openly and clearly, without myths.
