On January 2, a tiger cub was born at Tierpark Berlin, located in the Friedrichsfelde area of Berlin’s Lichtenberg district. The mother is a 15-year-old Sumatran tigress named Mayang.
This time, a single cub was born. It is the third offspring of Mayang and the 17-year-old male tiger Jae Jae. The pair previously had the sisters Luise and Lotte in 2022, followed by twins Ede and Kuno in February 2024.
Both the mother and the cub are reported to be in good health. For the time being, they are staying in a protected indoor area under the supervision of zoo specialists.
The Sumatran tiger is a tiger subspecies native exclusively to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. These animals are solitary by nature and are mainly active at night. During summer, activity peaks at night and during twilight hours, while in winter daytime activity is also observed.
The Sumatran tiger is the smallest of all tiger subspecies. Adults reach a shoulder height of around 60 centimeters, with a body length ranging from 1.8 to 2.7 meters. Male tigers weigh between 100 and 130 kilograms, while females weigh between 70 and 90 kilograms.
Their fur ranges from orange to reddish-brown and features black stripes that are broader and more intense than those of other tiger subspecies, providing effective camouflage in dense tropical forests.
Males have longer hair on the neck, throat and cheeks, forming mane-like whiskers that protect the face in thick vegetation. The long tail serves as a balance aid and a means of communication.
The natural habitat includes lowland and mountain rainforests, peat swamps and mangrove forests.
Due to deforestation, hunting and poaching, the subspecies is critically endangered. As of 2024, the global population is estimated at around 400 to 600 individuals.
The birth of the cub is considered an important contribution to international conservation efforts and has attracted strong interest from experts and zoo visitors alike.
