According to current weather forecasts, Cologne and the wider state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) are expected to experience a significant cold spell with frost and potential snowfall around the 2025/26 New Year’s period.
Towards the end of December, temperatures dropped to around -5 °C or below, offering an early indication of the approaching cold phase. Different weather models predict that a cold front may move across the region around New Year’s Eve (December 31) and into the early days of January, bringing frost and possible snow.
The most substantial snowfall is anticipated in higher altitude areas such as the Sauerland and the Eifel, where snow accumulation may be significant. In the lowland regions, including Cologne city, precipitation is more likely to fall as sleet or wintry rain, although snow showers cannot be ruled out.
Some weather models also suggest that significant new snow — up to 10–20 cm in places — could occur during the first weekend of January 2026, depending on humidity and atmospheric conditions.
This combination of cold air influx and moisture increases the likelihood of wintery weather conditions across NRW and eastern parts of the region, with local variations expected.
