Düsseldorf — arrest after supermarket theft
On the evening of 17 November 2025, a man was arrested in Düsseldorf’s Stadtmitte district after attempting to steal from a supermarket on Schadowstraße. Police officers in plain clothes noticed his suspicious behavior and were able to prevent the incident almost immediately.
According to Düsseldorf police, the officers observed the man around 22:40 as he walked through the store, behaving nervously. He hid several packs of cigarettes under his clothing and attempted to leave without passing the checkout area.
When approached by the officers, the man tried to flee but was stopped just a few meters from the entrance. A search revealed a hammer, which could have been used for intimidation or forced entry, as well as cash and stolen goods. The man was brought to the station for further questioning.
Initial investigations showed that the suspect was already known for similar offenses. Police are examining whether he is connected to other recent thefts in the city center reported over the past weeks. The Schadowstraße area is heavily frequented, especially in the evenings, making it a potential hotspot for petty crime.
Police note that the work of undercover patrols is an essential part of crime prevention. Their presence allows rapid intervention and prevents situations from escalating. In this case, their actions led to a swift arrest and minimal damage.
The investigation continues as officers determine whether the man acted alone or is linked to other incidents. The stolen items were returned to the store, and the financial loss for the business remains minor.
