According to the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LAGeSo), the number of Mpox (monkeypox) infections in the capital has risen sharply this year. Reported cases have nearly doubled compared to the total number over the previous two years. In 2023 there were 87 cases, in 2024 – 68, and in the current year – already 160 confirmed infections.
Mpox (monkeypox virus) is a relatively rare zoonotic disease that originated in Central Africa and spread to Europe. It is transmitted from animals to humans. The first European cases were detected in 2018 in the UK, mainly among men who have sex with men.
The incubation period ranges from 6 to 21 days. Early symptoms include fever, muscle pain, fatigue, and general intoxication. Swollen lymph nodes are a typical sign distinguishing Mpox from smallpox. The disease generally has a milder course and a lower mortality rate.
Transmission occurs mainly through body fluids (semen, blood, saliva) and, to a lesser extent, via droplets. Pregnant women can transmit the virus to their babies. Infection can also occur through contact with animals during hunting, butchering, or food preparation. Vaccination is recommended in Germany for high-risk groups, especially men who have sex with men and frequently change partners.
Experts emphasize that the 2025 outbreak is not large-scale but should serve as a warning since the virus remains active, especially among men aged 20 to 60. LAGeSo experts note that the situation is under control but vigilance, symptom awareness, and timely vaccination remain essential.
